The Judicial Educator Service is comprised of a very accomplished lineup of educators and housing professionals with years of experience in the following topic areas:
Academic Integrity
Educators: Dave McKelfresh and Blane Nickeson
David McKelfresh is on a joint-appointment at Colorado State University as Director of Staff Training and Assessment with the Office of Housing and Food Services, and as an Assistant Professor in the Student Affairs in Higher Education masters program. Dave received his Master’s degree at Colorado State University, and his Ph.D. at the University of -Northern Colorado.
Blaine Nickeson is currently a Hall Director with the Office of Residence Life at Colorado State University. He is also a graduate student in the Student Affairs in Higher Education program. Blaine earned his bachelors degree from the University of Washington in Seattle.

Alcohol Module 1: Choosing a Direction
Educator: Pam McCracken, Dessa Bergen-Cico, Robert Chapman
Pam McCracken, MSW, has served as director for The Center for Drug and Alcohol Education at Colorado State University for five years, overseeing the programming, training, assessments, counseling, and outreach for the center. She has a strong background in community mobilization, group facilitation, and program planning. She has supervised students and staff extensively in the field of drug and alcohol education and in addressing the consequences of drug and alcohol use. Her teaching experience includes First Year Seminar classes, Introduction to Residence Life, and the Center’s DAY I (Drugs, Alcohol and You) course. She performs numerous community and campus-wide presentations each year. In addition to membership on the local school district’s Safe and Drug Free Schools Committees she is on the Executive Committee for TEAM Fort Collins, Chair of the University’s drug and alcohol task force, and is a member of the Fort Collins Community Mobilization Advisory Board and the Fort Collins Social Norms planning board.
Dessa Bergen-Cico is the Associate Dean of Students at Syracuse University, where she has worked for the last six years. Dessa has published several research studies in the field of college student substance abuse, and through a university-wide effort and under her direction, Syracuse University won the Promising Practices Award for substance abuse prevention programming from the United States Department of Health and Human Services, and a Model Program Grant for substance abuse prevention and health enhancement through the United States Department of Education.
Dessa has a Doctorate in Education from Syracuse University, which she obtained at age 26. She is the mother of 2 teenaged children.
Robert Chapman has worked in the addiction field for 26 years – from 1973 through 1988 in direct treatment, delivering individual and group counseling services, providing clinical supervision, and conducting training and consulting; since 1988, the coordinator of the Alcohol and Other Drug Program at La Salle University. In addition to his clinical work in La Salle’s Counseling Center, Dr. Chapman is an adjunct faculty member in the M.A. program in Clinical/Counseling Psychology, coordinating the addiction concentration since 1995. His areas of professional interest include counselor education, the role of theory in the delivery of counseling services, and cross-cultural counseling and the delivery of human services to the culturally different client. He is an adopted Seneca Indian, holds a M.S.Ed in Counseling Psychology from St. Bonaventure University and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Syracuse University.

Civility and Respect
Educators: Judy Piercy and Joseph M. Stricklen
Judy Piercy earned the B.S. in Psychology at Quincy University in Illinois and the M.A. in Counselor Education from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. With more than 20 years experience in student affairs, she has held positions at Illinois Sate University, Western Illinois University, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and West Virginia Tech. She has been at Ohio University since 1989 were she has served as Assistant Director of Residence Life, Assistant Director of University Judiciaries, and is presently Director of University Judiciaries.
Joseph M. Stricklen earned his B.S in Education and M.S. in College Student Personnel from Ohio University. He has served the profession for eight years in residence life and judiciaries at Berea College and Ohio University and is currently a hearing officer for University Judiciaries at Ohio University. “Mac’s” particular interest areas are critical thinking, ethics, and community responsibility.

College & Coved-19: What Every Student Should Know
Educators: Nancy Davis Griffin
Nancy Davis Griffin served as the COVID-19 Ombudsman for the University of Southern Maine (USM) from March to June 2020, a position that not only served USM, but also the other schools in the University of Maine System. She retired from USM after 38 years in higher education (at 5 institutions) having served USM as the Chief Operations Officer and Vice President for Enrollment Management & Student Affairs. Currently Nancy is on contract with USM to assist with the development of their 5-year Strategic Plan and Enrollment Management Plan. She received her BS from the University of Southern Maine, her MA from Fairfield University and has completed doctoral work at the University of Hartford.

Educator: Aaron Lucier
Aaron Lucier received his Bachelors of Arts from University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He began working with housing while working on his Masters at Florida State University. He went on to work as a residence life staff person at Western Illinois University and Allegheny College, before going to East Carolina University (ECU). He started at ECU as a Residence Hall Coordinator. His long term hobby for working with computers and technology turned into a new position within the department in 1996, providing technical support and guidance for ECU’s fledgling residential student computer network. The position grew into an Assistant Director position in 1998. In 2001, Aaron received a Graduate Certificate in Computer Networking from East Carolina University, and is currently working on his Doctorate in Education. In February of 2003, Aaron began serving as the Interim Associate Director of Campus Living at ECU in addition to his technology responsibilities. He was the Chair of the ACUHO-I Information Technology Committee from October 2002 to October 2004. He is currently the Director of Operations, Associate Director of Campus Living at East Carolina University.

Dating Violence & Date Rape: You Need To Know
Educator: Kimberly Shaw
After choosing a career in law enforcement, Kimberly Shaw received her bachelors degree in Criminal Justice from Temple University. She graduated from the police academy as class valedictorian, and obtained a position as police officer at Temple. Kim was soon promoted to detective, and has attended numerous training programs, which include the Montgomery County Intercounty Detective School sponsored by the FBI. Detective Shaw wears many hats. She is an adjunct professor and instructs the R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) Program; and serves as instructor for the Municipal Police Officer Education & Training Commission for the State of Pennsylvania. Kim is also a Verbal Judo instructor. Detective Shaw is currently pursuing a masters degree in Education at Temple. She is the mother of Carlton, a member of the armed services, and Adelle, a sophomore at Temple.

Fire Safety: College Student Guide For Living
Educator: Craig D. Allen
Craig Allen is the Director of Housing & Residence Life at Texas Christian University. He earned his MA in Higher Education/Student Personnel from the University of Arizona and his BS in Marketing from the State University of New York at Oswego.
Craig worked at Seton Hall University from 1995-2005, serving as Director of Housing and Residence Life from June 1998 to August 2005. Prior to that he was an Associate Director at Seton Hall from 1995-1998, and a Complex Coordinator at Syracuse University from 1993-1995.
Craig is active in the Southwest Association of College and University Housing Officers (SWACUHO) most recently serving as co-chair for the 2014 SWACUHO Annual Conference. He was Vice President/President of the Mid-Atlantic Association of College and University Housing Officers (MACUHO) from 2003-2004, and is currently a member of the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I) Foundation Board
Craig was the Director of Housing and Residence Life at Seton Hall University when a fire occurred in a 600 bed residence hall that killed 3 students and injured 54 students and 2 fire fighters.

Educator: Dr. Jon A. Conlogue
Dr. Jon A. Conlogue earned his Doctorate in Higher Education Administration at the University of Pittsburgh.
He has been Executive Director for Residential Services and Campus Life at Westfield State College, where he has worked since 1993. He also teaches in the Communication Department.
Jon’s extensive experience involves residence hall work at five different institutions in Connecticut, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
Jon served as Treasurer and President for NEACUHO, and the Co-Director of the Regional Entry Level Institute (RELI), an annual, comprehensive professional development experience for new professionals from the MACUHO and NEACUHO regions.

Healthy Relationships
Educator: Bill Martino
Bill Martino has worked in Higher Education since 1990, all of his years in Residence Life. Bill is currently the Coordinator for Residential Student Services at New York University. In his current position, Bill advises and trains student mediators, who provide peer mediation services and conduct educational workshops for NYU residents. Bill is blessed with a wonderful family, including a 5 year old who makes him “laugh without end”, a 3 month old who is precious, and a his wife Michelle who keeps him grounded.

How to Successfully Live with a Roommate: A Blueprint for Success
Educators: Sofia Bautista Pertuz and Lynn Riker
Sofia Bautista Pertuz recently joined the Housing and Residence Life staff at Teachers College – Columbia University as Assistant Director for Residence Life. She is a PhD candidate at Seton Hall University. Sofia has held former positions as Assistant Director for First Year Experience and for Operations at Seton Hall as well as Residence Hall Director at Ramapo College of New Jersey. She lives in New York City with her husband Antonio.
Lynn Riker is the Director of Residence Life at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Lynn has been involved in training around conflict resolution for 15 years. Throughout her professional career she has presented at student conferences (GLACURH and NACURH), professional conferences (GLACUHO, MACUHO, RELI and ACUHO-I) and staff training (Central Michigan, Seton Hall and New Jersey Institute of Technology).

Educator: Jack Voorhees
Jack Voorhees is a Master’s Candidate at Indiana University-Bloomington. Currently, he works as the Building Manager at the Indiana Memorial Union and Program Team Coordinator for the Association of College Unions International. Jack has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Colorado State University where he worked in Residence Life, Orientation and Summer Conferences. Living Responsibly in an Off-Campus Environment
Educator: Lisa A. Miller
Lisa Miller is the Assistant Director for Conflict Resolution & Student Conduct Services at Colorado State University. She is a hearing officer for non-residence hall cases. In addition, Lisa works with a new program at CSU offered to students with drug and alcohol concerns that is based upon the community drug court model. Lisa is taking courses toward a PhD in Educational Leadership.

Jim Weber, LCSW, is a Senior Staff Counselor and Licensed Social Worker with a Master of Social Work from Colorado State University. Jim has extensive experience related to substance abuse and treatment and recovery. Prior to working at Colorado State, Jim worked in both inpatient and outpatient family and adolescent drug and alcohol treatment programs.

Educator: Christine Haase and Roselyn Cutler
Christine Haase began her career in higher education in the Student Media Department at Colorado State University. In her current position as Coordinator in The Office of Equal Opportunity, she conducts training workshops on campus to advance equitable hiring practices and promote diversity and civility in the workplace. Christine has a Bachelors degree in Journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a Masters degree in Speech Communication from Colorado State University.
Roselyn Cutler is the Associate Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity at Colorado State University. She received her Masters degree from Colorado State University in Philosophy. She is passionate about higher education and issues of diversity within our society. Her role at CSU allows her to combine her passion for both. Roselyn conducts trainings and workshops on diversity in higher education throughout her region.

Educator: Shawn McGuirk
Shawn McGuirk is a Clinician at LUK, Inc., and works to provide in home and outpatient therapy for individuals and families.
Shawn worked at University of Massachusetts Amherst as the Assistant Dean of Students, and as the Director of Student Conduct at Fitchburg State University, and Brandeis University.
He completed his graduate work at Bowling Green State College in Ohio.

Safe Living on a College Campus
Educator: Allan Schwartz, CPP and Anne Grabowy
A Board Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Allan Schwartz co-founded, and is President of Preventexx International LLC, a security and safety, education and training company specializing in business continuity, contingency planning and crisis and emergency management.
Allan is a 30-year veteran in the security industry, having held senior marketing and engineering management positions at American District Telegraph (ADT) and at Cardkey Systems. Early in his career, he was an aerospace engineer specializing in rocket science and technology where he developed numerous innovations in America’s defense and space programs.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from The City College of New York and an MBA from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York.
Allan is an author in the security and safety field and has lectured extensively to various industry and trade groups, at John Jay College For Criminal Justice, and the University of Louisville, Crime Prevention Institute. He is an Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at New York City Technical College. In addition, he holds several U.S. Patents.
Allan is active in the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) and the International Association of Health and Hospital Security (IAHHS).
Anne Grabowy co-founded, and is Chairman of Preventexx International LLC, a security and safety, education and training company specializing in business continuity, contingency planning and crisis and emergency management.
Anne has a 15-year track record in ISO 9002 Quality Systems, the creation of standards, procedures and audit checklists for physical safety and security and administration of technical operations at Dow Chemical. Earlier, in her career, she co-founded a national safety institute.
Anne is an author in the security and safety field and has lectured extensively to various industry and trade groups Anne is active in the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) and the International Association of Health and Hospital Security (IAHHS).

Educator: Gwen Sieving, Health Educator, Colorado State University
Gwen Sieving has a Masters of Science degree in Wellness Management from Colorado State University, where she is currently employed as a Health Educator, and serves as the coordinator for the Colorado Collegiate Tobacco Prevention Initiative Grant. Gwen has completed training at the Mayo Clinic in nicotine dependency, and she will be completing her certification as a Tobacco Assistance Specialist from University of Florida in August 2003. She has worked in tobacco cessation in several different setting including corporate and community health, as well as college health. She has 9 years of experience in the field of tobacco cessation, and her primary interest is in the fields of social marketing and behavior change.

Understanding Myself and Others: Similarities and Differences
Educator: Mims Harris & Randy McCrillis
Mims Harris, with an M.S. in College Student Personnel Administration from Indiana University, enjoyed a 30-year tenure at Colorado State University before resigning in July 2000. For 28 years, she worked in Campus Activities, providing the leadership for a comprehensive program in entertainment and events, leadership development, Greek Life, Outdoor Adventure Program, student organizations, and the Lory Student Center’s Information Desk. Her last two years were spent in designing and implementing a leadership development program for faculty and staff members in supervisory positions as well as coordinating the University’s monthly orientation program for new employees. In addition, Mims held an affiliate faculty position with the School of Education at CSU, teaching courses in cross-cultural education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She developed and coordinated the University’s Multicultural Education Team from 1990-1995 and served as a facilitator for the University’s curriculum infusion project. She has studied extensively with Lillian Roybal Rose Cross-Cultural Communication Seminars and with the Intercultural Communications Institute in Portland, Oregon.
Randy McCrillis, with an M.S. in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Colorado State University, is currently the Director of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Student Services at Colorado State University. He also served as the Multicultural Leadership Training and Development Coordinator for the Department of Residence Life at Colorado State University. Most recently, he provided the leadership in designing and implementing an extensive program in diversity training and programming for students, faculty, and staff members. The main focus of this organization was to help majority culture individuals gain a better insight into who they are as cultural beings and how to be allies to groups other than their own. Furthermore, Randy has taught courses in cross-cultural communication and diversity facilitation to both graduate and undergraduate students.

Understanding and Managing Conflict
Educator: Rick Olshak
Rick Olshak is the author of “Mastering Mediation: A Guide for Training Mediators in a College or University Setting,” published by LRP Publications. Rick has trained students, faculty, and staff at colleges across the nation in formal mediation techniques, and is a veteran court, community, and higher education mediator. Rick serves as the director of student dispute resolution services at Illinois State University and is a past president of the Association for Student Judicial Affairs (ASJA).
