One of the programs that I worked on this semester was a program entitled “Be the Change Clothing Exhange”. To begin, I need to thank the Co-RA that I worked on this program with: Jennie Sekanics.
It is basically a campus-wide clothing drive that we turned into a thrift shop. For this program, I, along with other RA’s, collected unwanted clothes from residents and other on/off campus organizations. We partnered with our college’s chapters of Delta Phi Epsilon and Delta Lambda Phi, as well as WILL (Women in Learning and Leadership). For every donation, the person who donated was given 3 raffle tickets. These tickets were used as the currency for the thrift shop. We priced the items as follows:
T-Shirts: 3 tickets
Jewelry: 3 tickets
Accessories: 3 tickets
Shirts/shorts: 6 tickets
Dresses: 6 tickets
Pants:7 tickets
Jeans: 6 tickets
Coats and Outerwear: 8 tickets
Dress Shirts: 5 tickets
We then organized the clothes, and held a Thrift Shop outdoors with a DJ, food, and other activities. We collected the clothes for 3 weeks prior to the event, and advertised heavily. Each item of clothing was worth a different amount of tickets. Residents could purchase tickets at the door to add to their ticket amount. We sold tickets for 1 dollar at the door, and all profits were donated. All left over clothes were donated as well.
