Moving On Campus...Things To Bring

So, you're moving on campus? Trying to figure out what you'll need? Typically prior to move-in (usually in August) you'll receive information about who your roommate is and how to contact them. This information is provided so that you can begin the process of getting to know your roommate, and perhaps coordinate who will bring what to campus.

Residence hall rooms vary in size, but a typical residence hall room may be as small as 10 feet by 12 feet. As a general rule, when thinking about what to bring to campus, you need to bring what you need to feel at home, while at the same time remembering that another person will be doing the same thing.

Things to Consider/Research:

  • Are the mattresses in the residence halls standard or extra large in size?
  • What is provided in the hall (i.e. ironing boards, full-length mirrors, vacuums, and in-room trash cans)?
  • Is the hall wired for cable and Internet?
  • Is adequate lighting available in the room, or do you need to bring lighting?
  • How much space is available under the residence hall bed to accommodate plastic storage containers?
  • Does that residence life program have specific guidelines pertaining to fire safety that impact what a student is permitted to bring into the residence hall (i.e. appliances)?
  • Does the university have size requirements for room sized refrigerators?
  • Are the halls air-conditioned? - if the answer is no, bring a box fan
