If You’re Interested in a Career in Housing/Residence Life…Have We Got An Opportunity For You

Submitted by Gary Schwarzmueller, Executive Director, ACUHO-I

Many RAs do not know that they can continue to work in the college and university environment after they graduate.

If you are someone who likes the work you do as an RA, maybe you’ve given some thought as to what it would be like to work full-time managing the residence halls on a college campus.

If you’re one of these folks…then we have an opportunity for you.

The Association of College and University Housing Officers – International is a group of individuals who work to promote the profession of housing and residence life, by providing information, training, and networking opportunities for individuals who work in the profession. ACUHO-I is pleased to announce a new program initiative this year. It is called The STARS COLLEGE.

Each year about 1200 members of ACUHO-I gather from across the nation to discuss and learn about the issues facing housing administrators. The STARS COLLEGE is an experience that will take place as part of this year’s annual conference.

The STARS COLLEGE is a two-day experience that will blend large group presentations with small mentoring groups, to introduce RAs to the profession of housing and residence life. The college will provide on-going participation and the continuation of newly cultivated relationships after the close of the 2-day college. Each participant will be asked to have an "on-campus mentor," who will also play a vital role in continuing to prepare interested RAs for positions in the field. The whole experience will be highly interactive and participants will obtain valuable information on how to continue to work towards the career upon graduation.

If you are a current sophomore or junior who is interested in pursuing a career in housing, you may want to consider applying to The STARS COLLEGE.

The STARS COLLEGE will take place prior to this year’s annual ACUHO-I Conference, on Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28, at the beautiful Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. This exciting, innovative learning experience is limited to 36 individuals. Priority consideration will be given to applications received by April 1, 2003.

If your residential program is a member of ACUHO-I, they have been sent information on The STARS COLLEGE. See your supervisor and Director of Housing/Residence Life to obtain an application and additional information.

If your residential program is not a member of ACUHO-I, e-mail Matt Brown at msbrown@ksu.edu to obtain additional information and an application.
